Pre-Operative Instructions (for IV & General Anesthesia)

How To Prepare For Your Oral Surgery

**Please fill all medications prescribed by your surgeon and begin as directed**

7 days prior to surgery

  • Discontinue using recreational drugs for seven (7) days before surgery. You MUST inform the Doctor if you have used any recreational drugs. You could have adverse effects – which could lead to DEATH.
  • Discontinue drinking alcohol for seven (7) days before surgery. Alcohol may thin your blood, which may cause a problem with clotting.

6 hours prior to surgery

  • Nothing to eat or drink for six (6) hours prior to surgery. However, it is important that you continue any regular medications (high blood pressure, or any indicated medicine from your physician), using only a small sip of water. Any of the medications prescribed specifically for your surgery may be taken after surgery with drink/food if taking them on an empty stomach causes you nausea.

Day of Surgery

  • You must have a responsible person drive you to your surgery and drive you home. Since most recovery periods are short, your driver may wait at our office during the procedure. Otherwise, your driver may leave their phone number and we will contact them once your surgery is complete for them to return to the office.
  • Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses, make-up, perfume, dark colored nail polish, stockings, girdles, or belts.
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting tops that have short sleeves so most of your arm is exposed.
  • Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Do not operate cars, power tools, machinery, etc., for twenty-four (24) hours after surgery.
  • No one, including immediate family, is permitted in the surgical suite during any procedure.
